Suffolk County recently became the first New York county to pass a law aimed at banning puppy mills. This is great news for puppies and the humans that love them. In light of this news, we want to remind you of some puppy mills facts you can pass on.
What are Puppy Mills?
Puppy mills are breeding facilities that care about one thing: MONEY. These breeders aren’t in the puppy business because they care about animals. They want to get as much money as they can for selling as many puppies as they can, which means that the animals’ health and well being are far less important to them than producing litter after litter of puppies. Some of the practices puppy mills engage in include:
- Breeding females every time they go into heat. The dogs never get a break from carrying litters.
- Keeping puppies in cramped cages with no room to play or even move around.
- Ignoring health issues such as swollen paws and serious injuries from chewing on cage wires.
- Providing contaminated food and water.
- Not cleaning up urine and feces so that the dogs have to live in them.
If these puppy mill facts aren’t enough to break your heart, consider this:
Pet stores sell over 500,000 dogs a year–most of them obtained by puppy mills–while over 5 MILLION a year die in shelters because nobody adopts them.
Please help end puppy mill practices for the sake of the animals.
Don’t buy animals from pet stores or anywhere else. If you are ready to open your heart and home to a dog, visit your local animal shelter. There are so many dogs waiting to be saved–let’s put the puppy mills out of business while saving the animals.
